The History of the Silk Mills
The "Burton Hill" Beginnings: The mill was originally built around 1790 by a clothier named Francis Hill. Back then, it was known as Burton Hill Mill and was used for wool.
Fire Safety Design: If you ever wondered why the windows are so large and numerous, it was actually for safety! In the 1700s, wool dust in the air was highly explosive. To avoid using dangerous candles or lamps for light, the mill was designed with massive windows to maximize every second of natural daylight.
The Shift to Silk: In the mid-19th century (around 1852), it was converted to a silk mill. It became a major part of Malmesbury’s economy for nearly 100 years, producing high-quality silk until it finally closed in 1941 to assist with the war effort.
Modern Transformation: The building was professionally converted into the apartments you see today in 1984, preserving the Grade II listed stone exterior.
