About this property

Nestled in the heart of central Berkhamsted, Alsford Wharf offers a unique blend of historical charm and unbeatable convenience. This two-bedroom, first-floor flat is a rare find, perfectly positioned for modern living while celebrating the town's industrial heritage.
The property provides a peaceful retreat with its prime location on the banks of the Grand Union Canal. Residents can enjoy the waterside setting and the scenic towpath, which offers a picturesque route into the town centre and beyond.

The accommodation itself comprises a spacious living area, a separate kitchen, two comfortable bedrooms, and a family bathroom. The property benefits from an allocated car port parking space with room for another car and additional visitors' parking, a coveted asset in this central location. While already a lovely home, the flat would benefit from some updating, offering a fantastic opportunity for a new owner to add their own style and value to this exceptional canalside residence.

A Unique Heritage: The Totem Pole of Alsford Wharf
Alsford Wharf is built on the site of a former timber yard, a history that is proudly commemorated by a truly remarkable and genuine Canadian totem pole. This striking landmark, a unique feature of the Berkhamsted landscape, was commissioned in 1968 by William John Alsford, a director of the timber company that once operated here.
The pole's story is one of gratitude. Alsford's younger brother, Roger, had travelled to Canada to seek his fortune but fell on hard times. He was rescued from starvation by the people of a Kwakiutl First Nations village on Vancouver Island. In an act of profound thanks, John Alsford commissioned the renowned Kwakiutl artist Henry Hunt to carve the pole. Standing at nine metres tall, the pole is one of only a few in the UK and serves as a powerful reminder of Berkhamsted's historical trade links with Canada and the generosity of the Kwakiutl people.

Beyond its rich history, the location is truly exceptional. Alsford Wharf is just a two-minute walk from Berkhamsted station, providing fast and frequent train services into London Euston. The vibrant high street, with its array of independent shops, cafes, pubs, and restaurants, is also just a short stroll away.

This property is more than just a home; it's a part of Berkhamsted's story, offering a canalside lifestyle with incredible convenience and a fascinating history.
