Location and Village
Market Lavington is a village and civil parish in Wiltshire, England, located about 5 miles (≈8 km) south of Devizes, on the northern edge of the Salisbury Plain.
It had a population of about 2,213 at the 2011 census.
The village lies along the B3098 road (Westbury-Urchfont) and includes smaller hamlets.
The area has very long settlement history: there was a Roman settlement near 5th-7th century, current church, and then a Saxon cemetery (5th-7th century) in the region.
In the Domesday Book (1086) the place appears as “Laventone” with two entries.
The parish church is Church of St Mary, Market Lavington (late 13th century) — it is Grade I listed and includes pieces of 12th-century stonework.
The village has a small collection of shops and services: a co-op supermarket, butcher, florist, hairdresser, café, schools and local pub etc.
For local heritage, there is the Market Lavington Museum housed in the old Schoolmaster’s House; it displays local artefacts, trades, social history.
It is near footpaths and countryside: for example, the long-distance path Wessex Ridgeway passes close to the village.
It offers a mix of rural charm with historic buildings, a village ambience, yet is not too far from larger centres (Devizes, etc).
For someone interested in local history, heritage and quiet village life, it offers interesting layers (Roman, Saxon, medieval, early industry).
Good for countryside walks and living near the edge of Salisbury Plain. The housing stock includes a range of older properties and more modern homes (as seen from listings.
